.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

It's been a long 10 years since G. Love & Special Sauce turned up on MTV with a catchy chorus that made "I like cold beverages" sound like some kind of mantra. Since then, G. Love has released a few albums, including a greatest hits compilation, become a father, and changed record labels — he now records for buddy Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. But the sound remains the same: the "hip hop blues," a term G. Love coined himself. The man and his reenlisted Special Sauce ramble into the McDonald Theatre in support of last fall's The Hustle, a G. Love solo effort and his first recording in three years. See Friday Calendar.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X. John F. Kennedy. Rosa Parks. We know the names. We've learned the history they made. Now award-winning Chicago playwright David Barr III retells the stories of the Civil Right Movement's grass roots in his extraordinary new play, My Soul is a Witness. Mixing the grit of gospel with the passion of protest songs, music is an integral part of this highly moving and inspirational drama. See Friday Calendar.

The UO Queer Film Festival, now in its 13th year, is the longest running gay and lesbian film festival in the Northwest. This year's selections include Jonathan Caouette's debut,Tarnation, which has been hailed as a masterpiece by critics from New York to Seattle (for EW's take, check the online movie review archives or last week's issue). Caouette stitches together snapshots, home movie footage, answering machine messages, bits of '80s pop culture and more to create a strange and vivid self-portrait. Other films showing during the festival include The Raspberry Reich, Freedom to Marry, and, perhaps most amusingly, "Once More, With Feeling," better known as "the Buffy musical" (pictured left), which will show as a sing-along Friday night. See Calendar.

Alienation, race, war and (post) colonialism are the main topics of the UO's Violence and the Changing Geopolitical Order in Literature and the Arts symposium. Eleven scholars from universities across the country will be presenting papers on topics including performance as activism, the poetry of New World slavery and the relationship of violence to artistic and literary theory. Between panels, UO theater students will present scenes from David Mamet's Oleanna, Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden and Harold Pinter's Mountain Language. See Saturday Calendar.

The Last Friday Artwalk expands yet again with this month's offering: 15 gallery stops along with eight public artworks. The tour begins at Possum Place with work by Sean Äaberg (pictured right) and meanders through Eugene, ending at the Museum of Unfine Art, where work by "local and inter-galactic" artists is on display. Stops along the way include employee art at Sam Bond's Garage and a group show at the new Firehouse Studio. See Friday Calendar.

The Free Form Film Festival, a traveling production of film and music, lands in Eugene twice this weekend. Each night, different short films are screened: Friday night includes pieces by Tony Gault, Tyrone Davies, Paul Baker and others, while Saturday includes the work of Brian Dewan, Van McElwee, Chad Gooch and more. DJ Z Lyons provides Friday's music; Simple Man takes his place Saturday. But the real difference is in the venue. Friday night's event is at Stewart Aquatic Center, where you can relax in a heated pool as the films roll. Saturday finds the festival at DIVA. See Calendar.
