BEST LOCAL BLOG

Mr. Random's Blog of Randomness BEST LOCAL BLOG

1. Mr. Random's Blog of Randomness

2. Brownie Points

3. Tie: BlueOregon

Calyn Kelly

If you don't know anything about Eugene's music scene, the blog of Mr. Random (Ken Fletcher) will remold your brain. He's everywhere, knows everyone in Eugene and has a boundless enthusiasm for musicians and homegrown talent that's hard to believe. The dude really loves the local folks. He's even a musician himself and hosts "Mr. Random's Armadillo Radio Show" on KWVA. Plus, he's been blogging since blog wasn't even a glimmer of a word, he writes about the angst of blogs and he tells stories about his cats. It's all Eugene, all the time (plus, linkage bonus: Mrs. Random's blog has fun recipes!).

BEST LOCAL WRITER

Sally Sheklow BEST LOCAL WRITER

1. Sally Sheklow

2. Bob Welch

3. Bryan Wollen

Sally Sheklow takes the cake this year for being funny, unpredictable and always playing havoc with stereotypes. We know she's going to be pondering some bit of life through a lesbian filter, and what an imaginative and literary filter it is! Catch her in EW every third Thursday.

BEST LOCAL JOURNALIST

Kera Abraham BEST LOCAL JOURNALIST

1. Kera Abraham

2. Bob Welch

3. Dan Hoyt

Kera Abraham is a rising star in Oregon investigative journalism and EW is fortunate to have her on staff cranking out award-winning, national-quality journalism on local environmental and political issues.

BEST LOCAL ARTIST

1. Adam Grosowsky

2. Tie:   Dan Hitchcock

   Kari Johnson

Adam Grosowsky BEST LOCAL ARTIST

Y'all each really, really like one artist. Or maybe each artist voted for herself or himself. Point is, only one man rose above the fray to win Best Artist. Ever eat at Bel Ami? You've seen Adam Grosowsky's paintings. Take art at LCC? You'll meet the man himself, a painter who escaped southern Illinois with a dream of teaching and who says that while the painting makes more money (a lot more money; the man shows all over the country), the teaching fills his social contact needs and keeps his art sharp and new. And while he says he doesn't like media exposure, he's recently been in The New York Times and on "The Today Show" for his slacklining. Maybe quirky extreme hobbies help sell paintings?

BEST LOCAL PERFORMING ARTS GROUP

Actors Cabaret of Eugene BEST LOCAL PERFORMING ARTS GROUP

1. Actors Cabaret of Eugene

2. Lord Leebrick Theatre

3. Very Little Theatre

We think ACE won because it doesn't have the word "theater" spelled British-fashion in its name. Or maybe it's because the mostly volunteer musical theater run by the indefatigable Jim Roberts and Joe Zingo, now in its 28th season, presents something almost every weekend, and often it's something the kids can enjoy along with the parents. If you can do Seussical! and you can also do Urinetown! while feeding the masses with pretty decent food and drink, you deserve applause — especially if you nurture the talents of youth and mentor them along the rocky path towards local stardom.

BEST LOCAL RADIO SHOW OR HOST

1. Nancy Stapp, KOPT 1600 AM

2. The Donkey Show, KFLY 101.5 FM

3. Vinnie & Icky, KNRQ 97.9 FM

Nancy Stapp does the "Breakfast with Nancy" show weekday mornings on the local Air America affiliate and perks up the local airwaves with lively, smart, left-wing conversation with guests and callers. She fits right in the groove with Al Franken and Randi Rhodes.

BEST LOCAL TV PERSONALITY

1. John Fischer, KEZI

2. Rick Dancer, KEZI

3. Marc Mullins, KMTR

Eugene: Totally devoted to one weatherman. Er, excuse us: one chief meteorologist.

BEST NONTRADITIONALFILM VENUE

Bijou Art Cinemas BEST NONTRADITIONAL FILM VENUE

1. Bijou Art Cinemas

2. Diablo's Downtown Lounge

3. DIVA
