Deadline
for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday,
a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with
event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com
While
we didn't encounter pianist George Winston
(pictured) on any cereal boxes (see below), we did
happen upon his extremely large press pack, complete
with his latest disc, Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions
(a Hurricane Katrina benefit album) and, anachronistically,
his 1996 record Linus & Lucy: The Music of
Vince Guaraldi. He has also turned songs from
psychedelic rockers The Doors into melodic piano works
on his Night Divides the Day (awesome!). More
than just a pianist, Winston plays the blues harmonica
and slack-key guitar, but only in live performances,
so be sure to catch him at the McDonald. See Saturday
Calendar.
Our
first encounter with country and bluegrass legend
Kathy Mattea (pictured) was on the back
of a box of Corn Flakes. We remember she had just
won the 1990 Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal
and the cereal box was offering a free CD of Mattea's
work if we mailed in 10 UPC labels. We abstained
from buying into this marketing gimmick (we didn't
eat enough Corn Flakes!) but we're thinking that
we won't pass up the chance to see Mattea at the
McDonald Theatre this week, hopefully playing
songs from her upcoming album, Coal, and
sharing anecdotes about her recent experience
presenting Al Gore's lecture, "An Inconvenient
Truth." See Tuesday Calendar.
The
Karin Clarke Gallery is currently featuring a
huge retrospective of paintings and drawings by
David McCosh (1903-1981), but with a curatorial
twist. The show, "The Places that Made Me a Painter,"
features works from places that inspired McCosh
in his painterly evolution, including work from
the Midwest, Oregon, Ireland, Mexico, France and
Spain. McCosh, in keeping with the Eugene tradition,
was an avid world traveler and took many photographs
of the places he visited. Guest curator Roger
Saydack will present a gallery talk, "What was
it about these places … ?" and include
travel slides by McCosh and recorded conversations
with the artist and his wife, Anne, at the gallery.
Let Saydack take you back (in time). See Friday
Calendar.
Oh,
and there's this small indie band
out of Portland that has (somehow)
booked up the Hult Center for Saturday
night. Has anyone heard of Pink
Martini, or their album Hey
Eugene!? See Saturday Calendar.
