The Great Whiteaker Cleanup Parade

The Great Whiteaker Cleanup Parade

Whiteaker residents are organizing a “fantastic” clean-up parade through the Whiteaker neighborhood from 1:30 pm to 5 pm Saturday, April 19. Costumes are encouraged, along with gloves and hand tools, and all ages are welcome.

The parade gathers at 1:30 pm at Scobert Gardens, 4th and Blair, and leaves at 2 pm sharp, accompanied by the mobile percussion ensemble Samba Ja.

“We’re celebrating our unique community,” says Wayde Johnson, a board member of the Whiteaker Community Council. “We believe this has never happened before in the history of Eugene.” The WCC is sponsoring the event, with help from Samba Ja, Sanipac, Ninkasi Brewing Company, Red Barn Natural Grocery, Whiteaker Cocktail Society, HIV Alliance and the city of Eugene.

Johnson says the event is linked to Earth Day, and he hopes the Whiteaker event will inspire other neighborhoods to organize similar events to clean up streets, alleys and open spaces.

If anyone has a pickup truck or can help in other ways, email Johnson at waydelove@gmail.com or call him at 913-3845. Registration is not required, but is appreciated, by calling 870-1997.

Rest stops with refreshments are planned at 3:30 pm at Wandering Goat and 5 pm at Glass Menagerie. Participants also get to party from 7 to 9 pm at Revolution Cycles. — Ted Taylor
