Oregon Brewers Festival This year, with its 21st birthday, the craft brew festival celebrates the 21st amendment — the one that repealed Prohibition. 72 breweries from 18 states serve handcrafted beer (and then there’s the 73rd beer, a collaboration between Widmer and the Oregon Brew Club’s homebrewers) to beer lovers over the four days of this non-judging (all appreciating) event. Exhibits, restaurants, a soda garden, live music (including Eugene’s Eleven Eyes, Matt Butler’s S.E.E. and Corvallis’ The Badfish Band) and vendors round out the hoppy good times. The festival recommends alternative modes of transporation, which makes extra sense given that they want you to enjoy their beer; free bike parking is available and the whole shebang is just blocks from the MAX line. It all begins with the Oregon Brewers Brunch ($20) & Parade, which begins at 9 am at PGE Park and winds its way to the festival’s opening festivities. Noon-9pm July 24-26 and noon-7pm July 27, Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Portland. www.oregonbrewfest.com or (503) 778-5917. Free admission; required tasting mugs cost $5 and each taste requires a $1 token (four tokens fill a mug).

Oregon State Fair I’m giving the state fair special billing this year for one reason: the slogan. “It’s like a magical enchanted land,” reads the top of the website. “Except real.” Really? Unicorns and fairies and everything? I can’t wait! OK, so I might be getting my hopes up a touch. But even without unicorns, you can still experience all the fun of the state fair: rides, animals, games, food, jousting, demolition derby, animal agility demos, the Artisans Village and loads more. Also, the musical performers range from High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens to Weird Al Yankovic, Creedence Clearwater Revival to … Poison?!? Man, why can’t we get Poison?
