Song of the Homeless

This anonymous poem was posted March 12 on the listserv of homeless-action@yahoogroups.com

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
Don't look for me downtown,
It's too cra-zy —
An there ain't no trees —
It ain't my stomping ground!

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
Can't stand this noisy street,
Those cars won't stop,
If I fall asleep — the cops will criminal-ize me!

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
Just shoo the flies away.
The birds and bees do as they please,
And I can read a book all day!

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
Where frogs come out at night,
It's freezing cold--but the moon is full,
Tickle-me spiders run — away from my flashlight!

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
The dragon-flies are friend-ly,
The shade is nice — my cats eat mice,
And snakes can watch me pee!

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
There's dung beetles in my poo,
If it's all the same — I'll take the blame,
Because my tarp is blue!

I'd rather camp the wetlands,
Where It's raining ducks and geese,
My tent is soaked,
And I think this oak — is going to fall on me!
