This Saturday evening, the sounds of Japanese Taiko drumming and traditional folk dancing will fill the air at Alton Baker Park, where the Japanese American Association of Lane County will hold its annual Obon and Taiko Festival. Each dance will begin with a lesson from Seiko Sensei, a longtime Obon dance instructor in the Eugene/Springfield area, and observers get the chance to participate in these storytelling dances. James Anderson, president of the Japanese American Association of Lane County, says that the Eugene Taiko group plays drums all over the state, so head to Alton Baker for a chance to see the group play locally.
