The hottest trend in the natural products world right now is something ancient: Cannabis. Hemp and cannabidiol (CBD) in particular are getting a lot of buzz. And rightly so. Cannabinoids like CBD drive our innate endocannabinoid system (ECS), which “helps our bodies maintain homeostasis — the equilibrium of physiological functions,” says Terri Williams, a Certified Clinical Nutritionist at Evergreen Nutrition. “So hemp is useful for myriad health concerns from insomnia, anxiety and PTSD to neuropathy, pain, inflammation and even for psoriasis,” Williams adds.
All hemp oils are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, but you can fine-tune it. Raw, full-spectrum hemp oil contains a variety of cannabinoids, terpenes and nutrients so it’s great for acute inflammatory situations. A decarboxylated, total-plant complex is the go-to for anxiety and sleep issues. For treatment-resistant conditions such as IBS, migraines and chronic pain, choose a CBD concentrate.
Hemp works synergistically with other botanicals as well as nutrients. For example, turmeric, the well-known inflammation quencher, enhances absorption of CBD; hops and chamomile augment hemp’s sedation efficacy; and omega-3s help maintain endocannabinoid function. “To nourish your ECS and boost anti-inflammatory activity, take CBD with omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oil,” Williams advises.
Evergreen Nutrition stocks a wide variety of hemp and CBD products (for humans and animals) from over a dozen vendors from pioneering CV Sciences to locally-made Ancient Medicinal Herbs. Choices include liquids, capsules and a scrumptious Ayurvedic edible. In addition, there are several topicals including a patch. “We stock CBD-only products as well as several CBD-containing synergistic formulas,” says Williams, “so we have effective options for people seeking alternative support for inflammation, sleep, memory, mood and more.”
Although Evergreen has been selling CBD from Cannabis for four years, Williams says, “We currently can’t sell Cannabis online, but if interested, people can call the store or drop in. Our well-informed staff will be happy to answer questions to help them choose the right product for their needs.”
