Letters to the Editor

I walk West Broadway several times a week. It should be a hub of commerce and activity. Instead it is in a sad state.

For decades, Pete Sorenson has been a courageous and highly principled servant of South Eugeneans. Since the timber-industry’s underwritten and orchestrated lawsuit of 2010, he has been the target of a sustained politics of personal destruction. This has been cold, angry and ugly — dripping with sarcasm and half-truths. Citizens should reject it.

How can the city of Eugene waste its time debating a downtown exclusion zone for people while turkeys are running amok? Yes, at the corner of Broadway and Willamette, less than three blocks from City Hall, turkeys took over the sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to go out of their way to avoid them.

Since when does a ambiguous county law supersede the First Amendment? The hearings officer at the county has made his decision on the mining of Parvin Butte. I think that everyone in the Dexter/Lost Valley area is shocked!

I watched the Feb. 8 proceedings of the Lane County Commissioners, stunned, as three of our elected officials (Jay Bozievich, Sid Leiken, and Faye Stewart) thwarted the efforts of Commissioner Rob Handy to have the board even consider possible salary reductions for county employees earning more than $90,000 a year.

Aren’t these dire economic times for the county? Why should any area of the budget be immune from discussion?

I’m one of the five Lane County commissioners. The county and the nurses who work at the county have been trying to negotiate a labor agreement for some time. According to media reports, these negotiations have centered around both wages and benefits, and it’s clear that reducing benefit levels to the nurses will affect their total compensation. I do not support reducing the total compensation levels of Lane County nurses

Thanks for your cover story (1/19) on the coal trains coming soon to dozens of Northwest communities. I wanted to alert you that there’s more that residents can do than to merely plead with their local politicians to pass nonbinding resolutions. They can instead follow the lead of the group Coal-Free-Bellingham.org, which just launched a local ballot initiative campaign.

It was with inspired heart that I took my kids to the Oct. 16 Occupy Eugene March. Looking at the exuberance and peace embodied by the people surrounding us, I thought that this movement might be one I could support and work for. And I did to the best of my ability. Until recently.

The Bijou’s presentation of Revenge of the Electric Car is a welcome sequel to Who Killed the Electric Car? a decade ago. The opposition has become an advocate. Ten years ago there was only one struggling EV maker in Eugene, today there are several Oregon-based companies involved in EVs and a network of charging infrastructure is growing. Yet most of us drive locally by ourselves on a daily basis.

They’re carvin’ away at Parvin Butte

They want to haul it away to sea.

By the time they get done

with their disruptive fun,

Parvin Butt is all it will be.

McDougal & Demers see bucks in the Butte,

Laws of nature & man they don’t fear.

For all that they care we can all go to hell,

and if we can’t go they’ll bring it right here.

I moved out to Dexter for peace & some quiet,
