Eugene Weekly : Summer Guide : 6.3.2010

You’re Going to Read What?

Dive into reading! Yes! That’s the summer reading message for libraries on a national level. Whether it’s “Make Waves!” (Eugene) or “Make a Splash! Read!” (Springfield), the message is clear: Keep those books and e-books sparkly clean by reading as you float the river! But actually, no, please do not drop library books in the river or pool, no matter what the Springfield Public LIbrary’s logo looks like, but do join that library’s summer reading club and meet your summer reading goals for passes to Splash Wave Pool and mini-golf. And for kids pre-K through 6th grade, completing a reading goal means getting a free book; older kids have to hope their names come up winners in the prize drawings. Springfield Summer Reading kicks off with Jugglemania at 11 am Tuesday, June 22.

At the “calm”-music-blaring, smoke-free, bike-walkin’ downtown Eugene Library, there’s no risk of meeting youth … unless they’re teens who have, um, dived into the summer reading program. Eugene doesn’t only give elementary kids free books and prize drawings to older children and teens; adults can feel great about summer reading and get one coupon for a free coffee when they sign up for Adult Summer Reading. Wait, that’s Summer Reading for Adults, not … oh, never mind. Read whatever you want to! It’s summer! Check the EPL’s website at http://wkly.ws/l3 and SPL’s at http://wkly.ws/l4 for all of the summer reading activities at both libraries. — Suzi Steffen
