K Records recording artists The Shivas nod toward vintage psyche and garage rock, but Jared Molyneux says his band isn’t merely a nostalgia act.

“We sound like a band that listens to a lot of garage music from the ’60s,” Molyneux says. “The sound and feeling of that style of music must have had a profound effect on us, as our music obviously resembles it,” he adds, referencing The Velvet Underground and The 13th Floor Elevators as well as artists like Sam Cooke, James Brown and Leadbelly.

Contemporary artists also inspire the Portland-based band. “Thee Oh Sees, Black Lips and Ty Segall,” Molyneux lists, as well as Northwest acts like La Luz and White Fang, which can be heard in Shivas’ song “Gun in My Pocket,” where guitars conjure up a delectable racket as drummer Kristin Leonard provides a whirling, force-of-nature surf-rock drum line.

This time through Eugene, The Shivas play The Barn Light. The Barn Light has recently upped its presence as a downtown live music venue. “Earlier this year we decided to try out some live music at The Barn Light and realized that it sounded really good in the space,” says Thomas Pettus-Czar, Barn Light owner-operator. “There should be more opportunities for folks of all ages to enjoy good music in a positive setting.”

“Eugene, like most towns, seems to be constantly struggling to keep music venues open — especially ones that are all-ages,” Molyneux observes. “If you like music and you like going and doing things, go see shows, it’s really fun, and as I’m sure your readers know, a lot of great groups come through the city.”
