As in many small cities around the U.S., Eugene's once-great daily newspaper has been purchased by a vulture capitalist chain, meaning its quality has plunged. As a result the Weekly and its small staff have been called on to step up news coverage just as advertising revenue has dropped off during the pandemic. Unlike a number of alts around the country, EW has continued to publish in print and puts out 30,000 copies each Thursday for free.

All proceeds from the sale will go to support EW's local journalism, with a focus on environmental coverage to offset any environmental costs associated with blockchain technology.
