Gerry Rempel’s Jazz Syndicate

February 24 • 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$12

Gus Russell (keys), Rick Carter (bass), Bruce Cole (drums), Lorin Hawley (percussion), John Polese (trumpet), Scott Mitchell (alto sax), Gerry Rempel (guitars)

The 7 piece Gerry Rempel Jazz Syndicate will be bringing it on with with some brand new compositions in the mix along with a wide array of original Jazz/Fusion compositions, melding elements of swing, Latin, funk, soul, and rock. The Group has 3 albums: Parisian Nights, and Dragon, and the Night Queen (live recording from Hult Center), and Sketches From the Underground featuring several of Gerry’s original compositions.

Sketches draws inspiration from classic jazz and Herbie Hancock-style innovators, but also from the prog rock era, when bands like Yes and King Crimson brought jazz elements into rock’s rulebook. Sketches track “Priestess” plays around with Middle Eastern scales over tom-tom playing that recalls jazz classics like “Sing, Sing, Sing” or “Night in Tunisia.” Rempel says blues and soul informs most of his work, but also metal, as can be heard in Rempel’s aggressive playing on the muscular, almost arena-ready album track “The Rabble.”

The group, in variations has also been featured in a number of Ballet Fantastique’s productions: “Pride and Prejudice”, “Dragon and the Night Queen”, and the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at the Hult Center.. From the Register Guard review — “Fabulous music is the glue that binds wonderful ‘Dragon’ ballet. The production” used live music, which was exciting as well as lovely.” Gerry has composed a number of pieces for these ballets.
