The Essence of Insight Meditation, a Six Week Mindfulness Series
Every Sunday, Mar 11 – Apr 15
Join us in a deepening exploration of Insight Meditation over six Sunday evenings, beginning March 11th. Also known as Mindfulness or Vipassana, Insight Meditation is a path and practice of wisdom, compassion, and inner contentment. This series will dive into the philosophy, practices, and personal experience of this profound and transformative life-path.
This series is inspired by the essential Buddhist teachings of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. Each session takes a unique theme and content, moving from mindfulness of our physical bodies to our emotional experiences to the life of the mind, and finally, to the nature and patterns of our consciousness itself. Each class is an engaging blend of lecture, guided meditation, and group discussion.
The course is complete with a full booklist, weekly course-review handouts, suggested practices for the week, weekly emailed articles, and access to recorded guided meditations. It culminates in a day-long silent retreat in nature on the seventh Sunday, April 22nd (attendance strongly encouraged).
***The content, especially of the first few courses, is geared towards newer practitioners, but the entire series is engaging for all experience levels.
Week 1 ~ The Meditative Journey: the essentials of mindfulness, the causes of our suffering, and the journey towards wisdom and compassion.
Week 2 ~ At Home in our Bodies: grounding our practice through embodied presence; finding wonder, intimacy, and belonging in our own skin.
Week 3 ~ The Garden of Feeling: understanding, welcoming, and transforming the myriad flavors, colors, and textures of our inner emotional energies.
Week 4: Our Brilliant Minds: exploring the miracle, and the limitations, of our thinking minds; revealing the truth of our concept, views, and beliefs.
Week 5: Our Intrinsic Awareness: what if there was a part of us that was already whole and complete? Practice the possibility of touching into our own innate presence and consciousness within us.
Week 6: The Nature of Experience: contemplating the fundamental and liberating truths of our inner and out lives – interdependence & impermanence.
Week 7: Day-long Silent Retreat w/ Eugene Insight Meditation Community: a culminating journey to deepen the roots of our growing wisdom and compassion, and plant strong intentions for our future practice.

Attendance at the first evening is REQUIRED, and attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged (as well as consciously creating the space to personally explore this practice outside of class through the six-week period).

This series is guided by local mindfulness teacher, Justin Michelson. Justin is a co-leader of the Eugene Insight Meditation Community in Eugene. He has been authorized to teach through Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA, and has been asked to offer Insight Meditation courses and retreats by his root teacher, Rodney Smith, in Seattle. He is also currently in training to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Justin’s teachings weave together the essential teachings of the Insight Meditation with a love for the natural world. He incorporates insights from evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and psychology with the traditional teachings for a modern, accessible and relevant presentation.
There are two books that are encouraged readings as companions to the course.
1) “Mindfulness. A Practical Guide to Awakening” Joseph Goldstein.
2) “Buddha’s Nature. A Practical Guide to Discovering Your Place in the Cosmos.” Wes Nisker.
Both books delve into the traditional Insight teaching of the “Four Foundations of Mindfulness” – which is the loose framework for this series. The first is more traditional and intellectual. The second is more creative and experiential.
