March 16 • 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm• $12
Drummer Rich Platz hosted the Sunday Jazz Jam for six years, and Saxophonist Fred Wesley helped maintain the facility. A host of Jazz musicians and fans chipped in to pay the monthly rent, while volunteers managed the micro-cultural center. It was a grass-roots community success, opening the present expanded and upgraded venue in 2011.
The Originators will celebrate the Jazz Station’s roots — while sharing the joy of making music. Nancy Hamilton’s warm, soulful vocals will be backed by John Crider’s lyrical piano stylings. Chris Orsinger and Hamilton Mays will provide groove as they share the bass chair. Rich Platz brings the rhythmic expression on drums.
Enjoy classic swing, Latin, Jazz, rollicking blues and poignant ballads drawn from Ellington, Ella, Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, and many more. Also expect a few tales from the early days when The Jazz Station was a cultural light amidst the downtown’s empty storefronts.
Chris Orsinger – Bass; Hamilton Mays – Bass; Fred Wesley – Sax; John Crider – Piano; Nancy Hamilton – Vocals; Rich Platz – Drums
