Wilderness Book Club
March 29 • 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm• FREE
The club will focus on books about America’s Wilderness areas and why they matter to our environment and to us. The first meeting will present the structure and organization of the club: What club participants can expect at future meetings and announcement of the first book selection
America’s formal designation of Wilderness has only been in existence since 1964 when congress agreed to designate certain Federal lands defined as natural environments that have not been significantly modified by human activity. These were the most intact, undisturbed wild natural areas left in our country-those last truly wild places that humans do not control and have not developed with roads, pipelines or other industrial infrastructure.
Club book selections will examine what wilderness means to us as citizens and individuals. How the creation of wilderness areas has affected our society culturally, financially and historically. What have been the benefits of wilderness areas overtime and what wilderness areas will look like in the future? These and other topics will be the subject of the monthly meetings based on each months reading selection.
