Dronsfield came to the Downtown Solutions Forum at LCC's downtown campus Dec. 2 and interviewed Mayor Kitty Piercy, Councilor Betty Taylor, Senior City Planner Nan Laurence, The Barn Light owner Thomas Pettus-Czar and business owner and UO senior instructor of finance Ali Emami. The story behind the Chamber of Commerce endorsement to privatize Kesey Square

The story of Kesey Square gets stranger and stranger. Yesterday — Wednesday, Dec. 9 — the Eugene Chamber of Commerce announced its endorsement for the proposal put forth by local business people and developers to privately purchase Kesey Square — public land — and in its place build an apartment building with retail on the bottom floor. Friday at Hi-Fi Music Hall will showcase a fantastic fuzzy spectrum of garage rock, from the surf pop of Seattle’s Tacocat to the ever-evolving punk-rock soul of Portland’s Sallie Ford. “We wanted to play a bunch of our news songs,” Tacocat’s Emily Nokes (vocals) tells EW on speakerphone from a van barreling toward Arizona. For those willing to brave the cold, First Friday ArtWalk will be brimming with holiday cheer. Courtney Stubbert, of Eugene Contemporary Art, partners with Threadbare Print House to host a pop-up print shop —  “Give Shop” — 5:30 to 9 pm Friday, Dec. 4, at 945 Olive in Broadway Alley. “Give” posters will be screenprinted on the spot. City To Issue Requests From Private Sector Only For Kesey Square

City of Eugene to issue a request for expression of interest for Kesey Square

The Kesey Square saga continues: The city of Eugene announced it will issue a “request for expression of interest” (RFEI) for the Kesey Square parcel at Willamette and Broadway, but has not put out an actual decision to sell the square to a public process. In an email to Mayor Kitty Piercy and the City Council sent Nov. 18, Assistant City Manager Sarah Medary says that city staff is currently “drafting a request for expression of interest, which will more formally ask if there is other viable private interest in redeveloping the parcel.” Continue reading
