Eugene may no longer be deemed the world’s greatest city of the arts and outdoors (in 2010, the city tagline shifted to “a great city for the arts and outdoors”), but more than ever our town is gilded with murals, sculptures, mosaics and other public art, which can mostly be enjoyed en plein air. Tickets have been sold out for some time for this all-star, all-boy “block party” boasting some of the leading names in a scene all the cool kids are talking about: EDM (electronic dance music). Postcard from Burning Man: In the Aug. 21 issue, EW covered the “Lost Nomads of Vulcania” — a steampunk steam walker created by Eugenean Joe Mross and his team of 20 for the Nevada art festival. Despite rains on the Black Rock playa that shut down the fest the first day, the steam walker made it to Burning Man and back with much fanfare. “There was a lot of people who said it was one of their favorite pieces out there, so that was really cool,” Mross tells EW. “It was fairly challenging to put up. Mark your calendars twice, because sister pubs Sam Bond’s and Axe and Fiddle have booked two rising Americana powerhouses this week — Zoe Muth & The Lost High Rollers and Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line, respectively. The two have much in common: guitar-strumming, soulfully voiced and glossy-blond-locked women front both bands, both are touring with recent albums and both leads have been shaped by the music their pops played growing up. Move over birds of paradise, because “Birds of a Parallel Future” are spreading their wings. Technology and culture mag WIRED recently featured The Silva Field Guide to Birds of a Parallel Future — a digital video project of 18 bird species from the 31st century — by UO assistant professor of Digital Arts Rick Silva. “I did think about the specific alternate universe some — how the physical laws or evolution might have been different in a parallel dimension,” Silva told WIRED. The rippling effects of Michael Gottfredson’s departure from the UO presidency have hit the School of Architecture and Allied Arts (AAA). Former AAA dean Frances Bronet is now the acting senior vice president and provost for the university. Filling her spot as acting dean is Brook Muller, an associate professor in the Department of Architecture, a core faculty member of the environmental studies program and the AAA associate dean of academic affairs since 2012. In April 2014, Muller published Ecology and the Architectural Imagination. Continue reading

Last night at the Summer in the City runway show, the team behind Eugene Fashion Week announced the new location of the next fashion week: Ninkasi's new administration palace, err, building in the Whit. Eugene Fashion Week will take place the second week of October this year, rather than its usual springtime dates, shortly after Portland Fashion Week (Sept. 29-Oct. 2). Eugene Fashion Week has also added a fourth show to the festivities this year. In addition to lingerie/swimwear, ready to wear, and couture, audiences will also see a retail show. Continue reading
