Open Meeting Lawsuit

Lane County is facing an open meetings lawsuit. Marianne Dugan, attorney for Rob Handy, filed a suit on his behalf June 29. At issue is the May 3 "emergency meeting" that was held without 24 hour's notice by Sid Leiken, Jay Bozievich and Faye Stewart, the conservative majority on the Lane County Board of Commissioners who are named in the suit. Who to call for lost pets

July 4 fireworks are known for scaring pups. If you lose your dog or find a stray this week the Greenhill/Lane County Animal Services transition may have you confused. Greenhill Humane Society started running the LCAS shelter as of July 1, and it appears that lost and found animals will be on the Greenhill website. Continue reading

CodePink’s Medea Benjamin on killing by remote control

On Medea Benjamin’s first day visiting the Pakistan-Afghan border in 2002, the CodePink: Women for Peace founder met what the U.S. military terms “collateral damage.”  Roya, a 13-year-old Afghan girl, approached Benjamin on the street with her hand outstretched and her head cocked to one side, begging for money. Roya’s mother and two brothers had been killed in a U.S. drone attack, their house apparently mistaken for part of a nearby Taliban compound.  Continue reading
