We hear Divine Cupcake, the dessert restaurant, is cutting its retail store and cart sales but will continue to do catering and have its carts at events around the county. The retail shop at 11th and Chambers, across from Ring of Fire, will have its final day from 10 am to 8 pm Tuesday, March 5, on its third anniversary date, according to owner Thaddeus Moore. As usual on its anniversary, the store will be giving away free cupcakes, but this time selling off equipment and furnishings as well.   Continue reading →

Let’s face it, after 85 years, the Oscars have become a bit of a joke. The awards show is too long (2002’s production ran an ungodly 4 hours and 23 minutes), with bad hosts (ahem, Anne Hathaway and James Franco) and the winners (and the nominations) are all-too-predictable (Steven Spielberg and Meryl Streep seem to be at least nominated every year, even when they don’t have a film in the running).  • What about that flat fee measure that is expected to be on Eugene’s May ballot, competing with other money measures? We’re trying to keep an open mind, waiting to hear all the arguments. But as a very practical matter, maybe the city should take another look at the measure considering that the fee is opposed by both Mike Clark, the most conservative member of the City Council, and Betty Taylor, the most liberal member of the council. Teachers Concerned Over 3×5 Schedule

A majority of South Eugene High School teachers sent a letter to the 4J School Board Feb. 19 asking the board to reconsider implementing the 3×5 schedule at all high schools next year. Several teachers were expected to raise these concerns at the Feb. 20 board meeting. At least one teacher from International High School (IHS) also planned to speak at the meeting after a dozen IHS teachers signed a letter to the board outlining concerns about the schedule. Valentine’s Day. One of the many holidays that started as a mix of a pagan festival (Lupercalia, a fertility festival) blended with a day in honor of some dude (St. Valentine) who died in an unpleasant way for the Catholic Church. No one runs through the streets anymore gently slapping women with the blood-dripping hide of a sacrificed goatskin to ensure fertility, but some of us would probably rather get hit with a dead goat than be subjected to the Hallmark cards and pink candy hearts of our modern Valentine’s Day celebrations. •  We’re not convinced that UO campus police should be armed with lethal weapons. Eugene police are nearby and more guns on campus increases the likelihood of accidental shootings and the use of deadly force when it’s not needed. The campus cops are already training to use Glocks purchased for them, so we wonder if the decision to arm them is a done deal, with little public input.
