Move over birds of paradise, because “Birds of a Parallel Future” are spreading their wings. Technology and culture mag WIRED recently featured The Silva Field Guide to Birds of a Parallel Future — a digital video project of 18 bird species from the 31st century — by UO assistant professor of Digital Arts Rick Silva. “I did think about the specific alternate universe some — how the physical laws or evolution might have been different in a parallel dimension,” Silva told WIRED. For a man currently wedged between a rock and that proverbial hard place, Eugene artist Joe Mross appears surprisingly serene. Here’s the deal: Mross, a metalsmith and perhaps this town’s foremost purveyor of the steampunk aesthetic, has but a handful of days to complete the grandest and most ambitious project of his life thus far — a 5,000-plus lbs. metallurgic behemoth of rivets, Plexiglas, fabricated steel and sandblasted wood that must be trucked down and set up for Nevada’s legendary Burning Man festival by Aug. 25. The rippling effects of Michael Gottfredson’s departure from the UO presidency have hit the School of Architecture and Allied Arts (AAA). Former AAA dean Frances Bronet is now the acting senior vice president and provost for the university. Filling her spot as acting dean is Brook Muller, an associate professor in the Department of Architecture, a core faculty member of the environmental studies program and the AAA associate dean of academic affairs since 2012. In April 2014, Muller published Ecology and the Architectural Imagination. Continue reading →

Eugene Fashion Week and Ninkasi pair up

Last night at the Summer in the City runway show, the team behind Eugene Fashion Week announced the new location of the next fashion week: Ninkasi's new administration palace, err, building in the Whit. Eugene Fashion Week will take place the second week of October this year, rather than its usual springtime dates, shortly after Portland Fashion Week (Sept. 29-Oct.  2). Eugene Fashion Week has also added a fourth show to the festivities this year. In addition to lingerie/swimwear, ready to wear, and couture, audiences will also see a retail show. Continue reading →

Walking through the dark empty corridors of Oaklea Middle School on a muggy August day, Principal Brian Young opens a door and flicks on the light. The classroom that comes into focus is filled with tables, colorful cabinets and student artwork tacked to the walls — all covered in the patina of art projects lingering from yesteryear. “It’s kind of sad coming in here knowing,” Young pauses. “I think it’s probably been seven to 10 years since Oaklea had an actual art elective as a class.” Continue reading →

A new fashion duo is taking the reins of the Whiteaker Block Party Fashion Show this year and they’ve got some tricks up their secondhand sleeves. Briah Izreal and Oblio Stroyman, new owners of the Whit boutique Redoux Parlour, will host a resale runway show with the help of St. Vinnie’s Creative Projects Manager Mitra Chester at 9 pm Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Cornerstone Glass Stage (1068 W. 2nd Ave.) preceded by a performance from the darkwave ensemble Black Magdalene. “We’re not working with designers this year,” Izreal says. The Hult Center is reviving its former Wildly Wicked Women of Comedy series, kicking off July 19 with comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer, an LGBT pioneer who starting doing standup in New York City in the early ’90s. Raised in Pennsylvania Amish country, Westenhoefer is definitely a trailblazer: She was the first openly gay comedian to land an HBO special and the first to appear on Late Night with David Letterman. Shanna Trumbly was sitting in a cave roasting hotdogs when she saw the hummingbird. The Eugene artist was visiting Yachats with her family and, while on a hike, they had taken shelter from the rain.  “Out of the corner of my eye, I see this little bzzz,” she says, fluttering her hands. “There are no flowers around or anything. It was just like rock walls and the ocean … It was so bizarre because it wasn’t even a place where a hummingbird would be hanging out.” She adds, “Right when it flew off, the rain stopped.” Continue reading →
