Art and the Vineyard will feature local wineries and dozens of other small businesses in a summer celebration that begins 11 am July 4 and continues through Saturday, July 6. Weather should be a little cooler and we encourage everyone to turn out and experience this unique outdoor gathering of artists, musicians and other performers, authors, chefs, brewers and vintners in Alton Baker Park. The event by the river is also a fundraiser for the Maude Kerns Art Center, Eugene’s oldest nonprofit community center for the visual arts.  Continue reading

What’s a “benefit company?” The Oregon Senate has approved a new designation for businesses to register as corporations committed to sustainability. Companies will need to meet certain social and environmental performance guidelines. HB 2296A has passed both houses of the Legislature and is expected to be signed by Gov. Delta Sand & Gravel and Babb Construction are the target of a class action lawsuit by four former employees on behalf of themselves and other current and former employees, according to attorney Alan Leiman of the Eugene law firm Leiman & Johnson, LLC. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Eugene, alleges violations of overtime provisions and other Oregon labor laws. The complaint seeks damages in excess of $3.5 million. Continue reading

The Thursday Lane County Farmers Market is moving this summer to Fifth Street Public Market starting June 6. The Thursday market was previously at 28th and Hilyard next to the Amazon Community Center. Hours are 10 am to 2 pm. Vendors include Agrarian Ales, Brandywine Fisheries, Rudy & Amber’s Organic Oasis, Horton Road Organics, Cookie Conscious, Sweet Leaf, Veun’s Garden and Lonesome Whistle Farms. LaVelle Vineyards is relocating its Eugene tasting room after 14 years at the Fifth Street Public Market, according to founder Doug LaVelle and winemaker Matthew LaVelle. The new location as of July 1 will be at the International Marketplace at 400 International Way, just off I-5 and Beltline in Springfield. The winery and vineyard are in Elmira, along with a tasting room featuring Friday night events. Continue reading

Soubise Restaurant opened May 12 at 50 W. Broadway, the redeveloped Broadway Commerce Center downtown. Restaurateur Cory Stamp and chef Gabriel Gil previously ran the Rabbit Bistro with a French theme, but their new restaurant is expanding its menu to serve a “modern Northwestern cuisine” with local and seasonal ingredients. Portland architect Mark Annen designed the layout and bar, and the granite tabletops and terrazzo floors at Sousbise were part of the original historic building. Local art and handmade furniture are also featured in the design. Continue reading

EWEB meeting rooms that have been open to community and nonprofit groups for years may no longer be available starting next October if EWEB goes through with leasing out the second floor of its North Building. EWEB spokesman Lance Robertson did not disclose who would be leasing the offices but it is “highly possible” that meeting rooms at EWEB will be part of the lease agreement. Dozens of groups use the meeting rooms and those that have booked rooms through the year have been notified.  Continue reading

First National Taphouse is planning its grand opening May 9 during Beer Week. The brewpub and restaurant is the centerpiece of Master Capital Development’s renovation of the 1866 Bristow’s Brick Building at 51 W. Broadway downtown, known for many years as the Taco Time building. The building was home to the First National Bank of Eugene in the 1880s and still has its old vaults. Upstairs are 16 New York-style apartments and still under construction is the Bijou Metro Theater which is scheduled to open later this spring. Continue reading

H&H Veterinary Care is a new animal clinic at 354 W. 6th Ave. in Eugene, site of the former City Center Cat & Bird Clinic. Sharleen Henery, DVM, is the new vet and Carolee Horning is her practice manager. Both worked previously at Banfield Pet Hospital.
