James Hansen and Eugene’s CLDC team up at PIELC
Lauren Regan and the organization she founded, the Civil Liberties Defense Center, have become known nationwide for defending civil liberties and environmental issues, including representing Keystone XL pipeline protesters. The CLDC is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and Regan not only be giving a keynote at the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, she will also appear on a number of panels. As head honcho of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from 2009-2013, Oregon State University marine biologist and distinguished professor Jane Lubchenco has a unique perspective on the way politicians regard climate change. Scam Alert
Phone calls aren't always from who the caller says they are — keep that in mind if you get calls from EPD or the IRS and they seem fishy. According to EPD: Eugene Police recently received a call from a man and his twin in another state who have received two calls from someone claiming to be from the Eugene Police Department advising that they have warrants for both their arrest and that they need to return the call immediately to ‘get this taken care of.’ This is not a practice EPD would use for a warrant. Biz Beat 2-20-2014
SheerID has grown to 21 employees and has moved from 1175 Charnelton to a larger building at 2451 Willamette St. The now vacant Charnelton building was previously occupied by the nonprofit Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics. SheerID specializes in verifying valid customers for businesses, nonprofits and other organizations that do targeted marketing. The business grew out of concern for fake IDs and coupons being used for discounts and special offers by military vets, students, alumni, etc. The company has seen major growth since launching in early 2013.
