Ruling: Government can’t keep public lands oil and gas drillers secret

A big ruling for the Western Environmental Law Center: WELC, which has offices in Eugene, succesfully argued the that the Bureau of Land Mangement can't keep secret the names of corporations that want to lease public lands to drill for oil and gas. “Every community has the right to know what corporations are seeking to drill on public lands near their homes and where they recreate,”  WELC attorney Kyle Tisde said. Biz Beat 2-14-2013

Sam Adato’s Drum Shop is packing up its huge inventory of new, used and rental percussion instruments and associated accessories in San Francisco and moving to 1755 W. 11th Ave. in Eugene, a location previously occupied by the Reptile Kingdom pet shop. The new store hopes to open March 1. Why the move? Adato closed his doors in San Francisco in late December and is quoted in the East Bay Express saying he likes Eugene and he’s ready for a change. “It’s a beautiful place to live,” he says. “I went from L.A. to Santa Cruz to San Francisco. Christine Menager

Born in France, Christine Menager had a chaotic childhood. Her mom died when she was 2 and her father, a rural veterinarian, sent his two kids to his parents’ farm in Normandy. “I was a high school dropout, a pregnant teenager,” says Menager, who got married at 17 and had two kids before she divorced her abusive husband. “He had a lawyer and got the children.” She went to nursing school in Paris, worked at a psychiatric hospital, and began to study psychology, then ran off to Berkeley with a guy she met in Greece. Gandhi’s Grandson to Speak at LCC

Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, is no stranger to Oregon. In fact, he once taught a six-week summer course at Portland State University. Gandhi returns to Oregon on Feb. 21, when he will give a talk at LCC called, “Lessons from My Grandfather.” When Gandhi was 12, he moved in with his grandfather and lived with him for about 18 months. During that time, he directly witnessed the famous life principles of nonviolence that his grandfather demonstrated in day-to-day life, and the experience deeply impacted his own life choices. Math Meets Art at UO

The UO just became a dash more cosmopolitan. Internationally renowned architect and designer Volkan Alkanoglu recently installed “SubDivision,” a site-specific sculpture installation spanning three floors in the atrium of Fenton Hall, home of the math department and math library.  Continue reading 

Tussle Over Timber Panel

A panel made up of cash-strapped county leaders, timber executives and environmentalists couldn’t reach consensus on dealing with logging on 2.6 million acres of western Oregon’s federal forestland, but it drew up some options to send to Congress anyway. “The governor tried to spin the report that he sent to Congress as the findings of the panel,” says Steve Pedery of Oregon Wild, calling the proposal “a summary of the bad ideas that have been put out over the last several years.”  Continue reading 

Commission Majority Votes for Jail Tax

The Lane County Board of Commissioners voted on Feb. 12 to send a proposed jail tax to the voters in May. The vote was 4-1, with progressive Commissioner Pete Sorenson as the lone “no” vote and conservative Commissioners Sid Leiken, Jay Bozievich, Pat Farr and Faye Stewart voting in favor.
