Too late for the Calendar this week: We hear from Doug Card that he’s doing a free program at 2 pm Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Lane County Historical Museum at the Fairgrounds, on "Wiley Griffon, More Than a Mule Car Driver." Card will talk about recent research that “uncovers new insights in to the remarkable life of Eugene's first well-known black man, who lived here from 1890- 1913, as well as on the history of Eugene, both good and bad." Community Alliance of Lane County has announced the departure of Kori Rodley as executive director. Rodley is taking a new position in marketing with Mountain Rose Herbs in Eugene. She has served as CALC director since March 2010 and will continue with fundraising and donor cultivation, according to a CALC statement Jan. 12. CALC started in 1966 as Clergy and Laity Concerned but changed its name when it’s mission expanded beyond opposition to the Vietnam War. Continue reading
When his father, an Air Force pilot, died in Vietnam, and his mother remarried, Harper Keeler went from grade school at the Air Force Academy to middle and high school in Pleasantville, N.Y. After two years of college at SUNY Potsdam, he worked for five years at a plant nursery in Bedford, N.Y. “That got me interested in plants and designing with plants,” says Keeler, who spent two years living the “hippie life” off the grid in Vermont before he moved west in 1990 to study landscape architecture at the UO. The ninth annual All Comer’s Meet hosted by the Disciples of Dirt mountain bike club will begin at 9:45 am Sunday, Jan. 20, at Whypass near Lorane. This is the DOD’s largest annual event and has steadily grown each year. “Attendance last year, verified by signed wavers, was 149 people but estimates were closer to 165, even with snow on the ground that day,” says Shawn Litson, spokesperson for DOD.
