For those willing to brave the cold, First Friday ArtWalk will be brimming with holiday cheer. Courtney Stubbert, of Eugene Contemporary Art, partners with Threadbare Print House to host a pop-up print shop —  “Give Shop” — 5:30 to 9 pm Friday, Dec. 4, at 945 Olive in Broadway Alley. “Give” posters will be screenprinted on the spot. In Eugene, one of my favorite markers of the season is the Día de los Muertos opening reception at that old dame on 15th Avenue — the Maude Kerns Art Center. By opening night (Oct. 16 this year), the sun sets early, hastily swapping out for a harvest moon. In the moonlight, the campus neighborhood buzzes with families, students and other show-goers crunching through the leaves and up the steps into the cozy, glowing art center.  Continue reading

The sun was shining and the leaves were falling as Eugene Weekly and its cadre of fantastic local artists presented ArtsHound on Broadway on Lane Art Council’s First Friday ArtWalk Oct. 2, a project we have been working on since May. Each artist — Santiago Uceda, Marlis Badalich, Neal Williams and Sara Talmadge — designed original art for an EW distribution box, which will be on Broadway downtown (outside Tokyo Tonkatsu, Noisette Pastry Kitchen, The Wayward Lamb and Bijou Metro) through October. A Letter from the Arts Editor

Sometimes in our fair valley, it seems the only cultures deemed worthy of attention, or investment, are football and beer. Another gallery falls; another brewery rises. Artists take heed: Paint your palettes yellow and green and let your kilns cook only the most bulbous growlers. Continue reading

October 2 is will be a doozy in Eugene’s art scene: Walk like a slug: The new SLUG queen, Queen Markalo Parkalo, hosts First Friday ArtWalk Oct. 2. First stop is 5:30 pm at The New Zone Gallery for its annual “Salon du Peuple” show. Then follow the slime to Eugene Weekly’s distribution-turned-art boxes — ArtsHound on Broadway — at Bijou Metro, The Wayward Lamb, Tokyo Tonkatsu and Noisette Pastry Kitchen (read more in “Street Views” this issue).  Continue reading

Eugene Weekly’s second annual art box series hits Broadway Oct. 2

At the beginning of summer, after scouring art shows, Instagram and online artists’ networks, Eugene Weekly found four local artists that truly inspired us and asked them to design original art for our ubiquitous little red boxes. The artists will reveal their art boxes at 6 pm Oct. 2 for Lane Arts Council’s First Friday ArtWalk downtown. A corresponding show of their work spanning the month of October will also be on view at Noisette Pastry Kitchen. Here, we introduce the second art box team.  Continue reading
