The expansive atrium of Oregon State University’s Kelley Engineering Building fills with the mid-morning chatter of students. Light streams in through the immense glass windows of this certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold building, reducing the need for electric lighting as it illuminates half-built solar vehicles that look like Mars rovers in a nearby classroom, complete with solar panels and heavy duty wheels.  For all OSU’s orange-and-black bravado, the marks of “green” living are everywhere. Community Boom

‘Free tuition’ proposal affects more than just budget concerns

As the school year starts up, the Oregon Legislature is discussing an idea that could swell the average Oregon community college classroom size and make higher education accessible for more students. Senator Mark Hass, D-Beaverton, has been championing a proposal that would make two years of community college free for many high school graduates. “We want to give access to every high schooler in Oregon, either as trade training or college courses,” he says. Sexual harassment is a serious problem. But UO professor Cheyney Ryan says that without knowledge of available resources and student rights, the problem is more damaging than it has to be. Ryan began an experiment in his philosophy of law class where students conducted extra credit surveys about sexual harassment of students by professors. What is sexual harassment? There are house parties and there are bars littered around the University of Oregon, but for once there is an environment in which drinking responsibly is promoted on campus. Every week, on Thursday nights, “Pub Night” will be held at the Erb Memorial Union with emphasis on limiting consumption and having a good time. It is an event that will incorporate underage and of age students, creating an all-encompassing atmosphere.
