Score big at local recycling stores

Andrea Norris

Andrea Norris of OSU’s Campus Recycling says the weirdest thing she’s ever tried to sell at the OSUsed Store is an entire pallet of 20-year-old unused jock straps. Although they didn’t exactly fly off the shelves in the campus second-hand store, Norris put the jock straps on eBay, and they started selling fast. “It turns out there are antique jock strap collectors,” she says. What many people don't think about is that the same rule applies for pet pharmaceuticals. It's unclear just what pet owners do with their pet's unwanted medication, and for that reason, OSU is launching a survey to assess common practices in order to learn more and strengthen its outreach and education strategy. Give it a click, because clean water is good for you and good for your pets. Continue reading

That’s Not Oil In Delta Ponds — It’s Bacteria

Park goers might have noticed an oily sheen hugging the banks of Delta Ponds these past few weeks, oozing only a few wing flaps away from the hunting green herons and basking Western pond turtles that frequent the wetlands across from Valley River Center. Don’t worry, says Jonathan Wilson, a stormwater regulatory compliance coordinator for the city of Eugene — it’s just a natural form of shiny bacteria. Continue reading
