Nancy Hughes and the nonprofit StoveTeam International will be recognized at the White House April 5. Hughes has been selected as a Rotary Champion of Change, one of 12 people nationwide honored for having “dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others.” StoveTeam provides efficient, inexpensive stores for low-income people around the world, saving fuel and reducing burn injuries and smoke inhalation illnesses. Eugene Bicycle Works is a new nonprofit community bike shop in Eugene. It partners with local retail bike stores to collect used bike parts as part of the Bucket Full O’ Parts project at the Center for Appropriate Transport. Donated parts are used to build affordable bikes for youth and people with limited resources. The public can drop off used bike parts at any of the participating shops, such as Arriving by Bike, Collins Cycle Shop, Hutch’s Bicycles, Life Cycle Bike Shop, Paul’s Bicycle Way of Life, REI, Simply Cycle or 10/10 Cycles. Emerald Meadows is a nice bit of county-owned acreage out at Buford Park where Faerieworlds has been held the last couple of years. We hear the county is planning on improving the site, maybe bringing in electrical power and even adding RV hook-ups in order to accommodate music festivals and other big events. The Cascadia Music Festival has booked the site for July 5 and is starting to sell tickets this week at cascadiamusicfestival.com Headlining the event will be Bruce Hornsby, Railroad Earth, Tony Furtado, Jelly Bread and more. Eugene Coffee Company has been in business for five years and is having an all-day celebration Saturday, March 9, at the store at 18th and Chambers, across from BiMart. Owner Sue Harnly was picked by EW readers as Best Barista in 2011. Harnly started the business with Alicia Hays and Adelka Shawn in 2008. Since then the store has sold 22,000 pounds of Café Mam coffee, 246,000 drinks and 56,000 donuts, bagels and pastries. Continue reading →

We hear Divine Cupcake, the dessert restaurant, is cutting its retail store and cart sales but will continue to do catering and have its carts at events around the county. The retail shop at 11th and Chambers, across from Ring of Fire, will have its final day from 10 am to 8 pm Tuesday, March 5, on its third anniversary date, according to owner Thaddeus Moore. As usual on its anniversary, the store will be giving away free cupcakes, but this time selling off equipment and furnishings as well.   Continue reading →

Sam Adato’s Drum Shop is packing up its huge inventory of new, used and rental percussion instruments and associated accessories in San Francisco and moving to 1755 W. 11th Ave. in Eugene, a location previously occupied by the Reptile Kingdom pet shop. The new store hopes to open March 1. Why the move? Adato closed his doors in San Francisco in late December and is quoted in the East Bay Express saying he likes Eugene and he’s ready for a change. “It’s a beautiful place to live,” he says. “I went from L.A. to Santa Cruz to San Francisco.
