Eugene Contemporary Art’s 5th Public Process artist residency is coming to a close: The painter and ceramicist from Georgia, William Ruller, will be giving a free lecture 7 to 8 pm Dec. 5 at the Wave Gallery. The following night, 7 to 9 pm Dec. 6, ECA will host Animula at the Wave, featuring art produced while Ruller was in residency (free). Continue reading
On Nov. 20, The Redoux Parlour and Grrrlz Rock joined forces at Territorial Vineyards to host a sold-out fundraising event to kickstart Eugene’s up-and-coming garment production house, Silver Lining. Territorial’s back room dazzled with lights (which looked especially cool against a backdrop of wine barrels), music, chatter and the latest in local fashions from Sweet Skins, Revivall, Sew Fresh, Stitches by V, Kendra Grace, Sparkle Glitter Glow and Taylor Made (who ended the show with one hell of a maternity dress — see no. 11). See new work by Jud Turner like “Navadurga,” a skeleton mandala, at the New Zone Gallery’s “One Night Extravaganza” 7 pm Saturday, Nov. 16, — part of the Life in the Age of Steampunk exhibit; $10 adv., $12 door. Steampunk costumes encouraged. Also on display is the 500-pound steel “mech walker” by Archive Designs. Globally acclaimed New York City-based Dance Theatre of Harlem makes its only PNW stop 7:30 pm Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Hult. Eugene Ballet Company brings the “foremost African-American ballet company” to Eugene for one performance only: Agon, set to the works of Igor Stravinsky by the renowned Russian choreographer George Balanchine, originally premiered at the New York City Ballet in 1957. Boobs. That’s what men on the street stopped to talk to Kari Johnson about when she was painting the “4th and Monroe” mural. What’s wrong with her boobs? Hey, she’s missing a boob! They would holler. The year was 1991, and Johnson was painting her first Eugene mural on a residential building in the Whit, featuring, at its focal point, a nude elder who has undergone a mastectomy. Continue reading
