In the words of Samuel L. Jackson’s character Ray Arnold in Jurassic Park, “Hold on to your butts.” Futuristic alternative hip-hop supergroup Deltron 3030 lands in Eugene Friday, Nov. 22. There’s a dynamic duo not to be missed at WOW Hall Thursday, Nov. 14: Lynx with opener Tender Forever. Lynx is a crackling mix of singer-songwriter, producer, beat boxer and multi-instrumentalist hailing from the Bay Area. Lynx’s latest album, Light Up Your Lantern (released Oct. 22), highlights her cool electric aesthetic, mixing acoustic and synth beats over gritty vocals. The WOW Hall darling — she was named Favorite Female Performer of 2011 — has collaborated with Beats Antique, Bassnectar and Matisyahu. Continue reading 

Back Beat: Halloween Edition

Hallow’s Eve offers a tasty witch’s brew of live music, so dust off your Ziggy Stardust unitard, your Amy Winehouse beehive or your Psy tuxedo and hit the dance floors.   Local jazz cats Nancy Evergreen and Joanne Broh host the Motown Monster Mash at The Jazz Station. Festivities commence at 7 pm with music by the All That Jazz & Blues band, Frankenstein’s Dance Floor and “Dracula Sangria” refreshments. Costumes encouraged; $12.   Continue reading

Eugene experienced a devastating loss in the music community this month: Bill Finneran, beloved founder of the Eugene Record Convention (the largest in the PNW), passed away from cancer Oct. 1 at the age of 62. EW last caught up with Finneran in February before the convention’s 25th anniversary when he expressed his eternal love of vinyl. Friend Marc Time, who calls Finneran “a shining light,” says the future of the convention is unsure at this time.   Continue reading

On Oct. 5 The Majestic Theatre in Corvallis will host one of America’s best contemporary singer-songwriters: Dar Williams. The Soul Train Music Award-winning artist brings his R&B “Pony” express — Grammy Award-winning songwriter Eric Bellinger and David Verity — with him to the Hult 7 pm Friday, Sept. 27. It’s official: reggae fusion band Sol Seed nabbed the crown for EW’s Next Big Thing 2013 with a final, outstanding performance at the Eugene Celebration Aug. 24. The 6-person outfit — including Michael Lennon (vocals, guitar), Michael Sorenson (vocals, drums), Benny Pezzano (vocals, bass), Kenny Lewis (vocals, guitar), Sky Guasco (vocals, percussion, didgeridoo) and Greame Pletscher (saxophone) — created a bubbly and psychedelic wall of sound that got the crowd swaying and singing on Willamette.
