Eugene experienced a devastating loss in the music community this month: Bill Finneran, beloved founder of the Eugene Record Convention (the largest in the PNW), passed away from cancer Oct. 1 at the age of 62. EW last caught up with Finneran in February before the convention’s 25th anniversary when he expressed his eternal love of vinyl. Friend Marc Time, who calls Finneran “a shining light,” says the future of the convention is unsure at this time.
Do you see life in neon? Israeli death metal drummer-turned-dubstep producer Borgore (pictured) does, and he’s bringing his Life In Color Rebirth tour aka the “World’s Largest Paint Party” to the Cuthbert Amphitheater Oct. 12. Look for aerial acrobatics, stilt walkers, contortionists and crowds clad in fluorescent fur.
There’s a newish music venue in town: Plank Town Brewing. The Springfield pub is now booking bands with a full fall lineup starting with The Slippery Slope String Band playing for a square dance 9 pm Oct. 11 with T-Claw calling. The rest of October is filled up with Breakers Yard (10/12), Texas Toasters (10/18), Alder Street All Stars (10/19) and The Ridgeline Runners (10/25).
Ahoy Florence! EW’s 2013 Next Big Thingers, reggae fusion band Sol Seed, are closing their five-week tour with a stop at the Bay Street Grille (1341 Bay St., Florence) 9 pm Oct 12. Three little birds told us it will be quite the party.
Jessie Marquez brings her mix of Cuban and Brazilian jazz pop to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s Museum After Hours series 6:30 to 9 pm Oct. 11; $5. Dance around the galleries to the sweet sounds of Marquez’s cheerful rendition of “Aguas de Março” and more.
