Easter gets an irreverent next-gen makeover at Caffè Pacori

From Friends-giving to Valen-Friends Day and Halloween, holidays are getting personalized makeovers. Could Easter be up for a similar rebrand? That’s the idea behind EASTER! THE SHOW! April 4 at Caffè Pacori. According to filmmaker Thor Slaughter of CowDog Productions, who helped plan the event, it’s an Easter-themed variety show with an anarchic spirit. He calls it a mix of earlyPee-wee Herman and The Muppets, with three short-film premieres, music, puppets, improv comedy, an eating contest from Eugene food truck Only Yolking and more. Slaughter says the event skews toward adults with an irreverent take on the Easter tradition — but it is family-friendly and won’t “punch down” at the holiday or religion. He calls his film an Easter Egg hunt-heist noir, and says the others spoof the TV show Ancient Aliens. Slaughter believes that unless you have kids or are religious, “Easter is this bizarre holiday where you don’t have much to do.” Even still, he says, “there’s a large contingency of people in Eugene who want to celebrate a holiday, but this is a very non-traditional town. I got into this idea: ‘Wouldn’t it be funny to sort of do like an Easter event, and see what we could do?’” The result “is a group of artists all coming together and trying to contribute a piece to this crazy whole that we don’t quite understand,” Slaughter says.

EASTER! THE SHOW! is 4 pm Saturday, April 4, at Caffè Pacori, 255 Wallis Street, Suite 3. Free.
