A dead cow changed Nathan Hart’s life. Driving to a gig in Central Oregon, the Eugene comedian hit the animal, which was already deceased in the middle of the road. The car was totaled. The steer’s fate was sealed. Hart was fine. Nonetheless, hitting that cow led Hart to think, “‘Hey, maybe it’s time to get an album out,’” he says. Hart records the album April 4 at The Hybrid Gallery. With 12 years of stand-up comedy experience, Hart hosts several comedy shows in Eugene and tours the region most weekends. He has a conversational storytelling style, blending East Coast neurosis with a West Coast slacker vibe. Tub Toast is the tentative title of his forthcoming debut comedy album, named for a bit “about why I don’t own guns,” he says. A week before the album taping, Hart says he’s still working on the setlist, but that approach suits him. Explaining his take on standup, Hart says, “Weirdly enough, I don’t think the jokes are the thing that people listen to stand-up for — they want to hear my perspective.” Will the dead cow get a mention? That’s unclear. “I’m working it out. It’s been a weird couple of months,” Hart says.
Nathan Hart performs 7 pm and 9:30 pm Saturday, April 4, at The Hybrid Gallery, 941 West 3rd Avenue. Tickets start at $20 and are available at TheHybridEugene.com. The show is 21-plus.
