New Richard Swift Record on MySpace
This is Not How to Promote Your Band (Plus, a reminder about deadlines!)
Let’s take a look at the image above, shall we? What you see there is one burned CD, a single word written on it in fine-point Sharpie. This is what came in a plain brown envelope earlier this week. Just this. No bio. No track list. Not even a flimsy little slip of a cover for the poor naked CD. Continue reading
Finding the Right Clues
Because I still have the tabs open: In this Thursday’s paper, you’ll find a wee tiny last minute preview of a show at Sam Bond’s by a band called The Clues. The Clues, assuming it’s the right Clues, include former members of Arcade Fire and the short-lived but beloved and awesome Unicorns. (There’s another The Clues in Colorado, apparently.) The Clues are kind of a pain to Google unless you include the band members’ former bands. But there’s some good stuff out there: Continue reading
Spring 2009: Get your established indie rock here
Yesterday, I got one of those makes-your-heart-skip-with-joy press releases: a new And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead album, Century of Self, comes out in just over a month! They’re independent again! MTV News says they’ve “amped up the guitars!” And they’re coming! To Portland! Well, you can’t have it all. (You apparently can’t have anything, if you’re me: Mates of State are passing us by again, too. What gives?) Continue reading
You Should’ve Been There: Frightened Rabbit (yes, again) @ Holocene (PDX), 10/30
No, it hasn’t been that long since I last saw Frightened Rabbit at Holocene and blogged a little about it; yes, it’s still worth seeing the Rabbit every single time you possibly can. I mean that. Even though it’s taken me a week to say so. Continue reading
Tift Merritt Q&A
As promised, here’s Jason Blair’s Q&A with Tift Merritt. A lot has been written about your voice. When were you first aware of your own voice? The first time I remember being aware of my own voice was when I had my first apartment. I would sing all the time and play music in the middle of the night and my neighbors would bang on the wall, telling me to be quiet. And I thought, I didn’t realize I was singing that loud… Continue reading
MFNW Saturday: Sweaty, Tired, Happy
And now it’s Monday. Isn’t it? I feel a little discombobulated. I’m pretty sure it’s Monday, and I’m tired, and I keep babbling incoherently to anyone who’ll listen about how much fun MFNW was. Seriously. Babble, babble, ramble, meander. Continue reading
MFNW Friday: In Which Bar Lines Are Long
So I got a little behind. Forgive me. Let me shift into present tense so I can pretend I’m not writing two days late. Continue reading
MusicfestNW Thursday: MY EARS, MY EARS
Honestly? I didn’t think my first night at MusicfestNW would involve staying out until after one in the morning, allowing my ears to be totally fucking battered, but lo, it did, and it was a little bit awesome. I did stay at Holocene all night, true, but I knew Calendar Editor Chuck Adams was out and about — I’m sure he’ll check in later about Battles and M. Ward — and, well, see, it’s more fun to have someone to talk shit with at shows, and the only other person I knew who’d be out last night was at Holocene. Continue reading
