• Local citizens concerned about the global climate crisis will gather at 12:30 pm Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, 1401 Willamette St., to give the Chamber a Golden Ostrich trophy, in recognition of the Chamber’s support for the U.S. Chamber of  Commerce and its blockade of progress on addressing the climate crisis. • A public campaign event for Kevin Matthews, candidate for Lane County Commission, will begin at 6:30 pm Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Axe & Fiddle in Cottage Grove. The event includes live music plus words from Jerry Rust, Hal Hartzell and John Sundquist.

City Club of Eugene’s next topic is “Working Together on the BEST Outcomes for Kids” at noon Friday, Dec. 6, at LCC Downtown Center, lobby level. Speakers include Raquel Gwynn, Sharon Tabor and Randy Bernstein from Eugene School District 4J and Peter Chavannes, City of Eugene. $5 for non-members.

International Human Rights Day will be celebrated from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Eugene Public Library with the theme of “Celebrating our Basic Human Rights.” This free community event will feature a proclamation from Mayor Kitty Piercy, a keynote address by the Rev. Dan Bryant and remarks from Alley Valkyrie, Paulette Ansari and Michael Carrigan.  Entertainment will be provided by NAACP ACT-SO students, folk musician Sam Brown, pianist Priscilla Dantas, violinist Juli Kim and singer Maggie Peake.

Sheriff Tom Turner is visiting communities in Lane County this fall for “Community Awareness Meetings” to report on the progress of the public safety levy passed by voters and to discuss public safety in the county. The next meeting is from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Cottage Grove Community Center, 700 E. Gibbs St.

Cascadia Wildlands’s 11th annual Wonderland Auction will be from 6 to 10 pm Saturday, Dec. 14, at the EMU Ballroom on the UO campus. Nearly 200 businesses have contributed so far to the event. Entry is $40 in advance, $50 at the door, kids 12 and under are free. See cascwild.org. 

• The monthly Interfaith Prayer Service will be at 6:45 pm Wednesday, Dec. 11, at First Christian Church, 1166  Oak St. in Eugene. See interfaithprayer.org.

• The Lane County Chapter of the ACLU will present a program on “Human Rights and Mental Health Care: Managing the Intersection” from 5:30 to 7 pm Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Eugene Public Library. Free. Speakers will include clinical social worker Ron Unger. Contact lanechapter@aclu-or.org for more information.
