Pickathon continues to be the best indie music festival under Oregon skies at Happy Valley’s Pendarvis Farm Aug. 5-7. This year’s lineup is a mixture of familiar names like Jeff Tweedy, Wolf Parade, Mac DeMarco, Thee Oh Sees and Thao & The Get Down Stay Down with rising stars — My Bubba, Blossom, Alvvays and Joseph. We’re most excited for the punchy indie-country songbird Margo Price from Nashville who’s poised to break out à la Jason Isbell; the intoxicating mix of Afro-Cuban sounds, jazz and indie pop of French-Cuban duo (and twin sisters) Ibeyi; the neo-soul and hip hop of Portlander Blossom; and the droning dream-pop powerhouse Beach House.

And this year, for the first time, Pickathon will be hosting a late-night comedy showcase curated by Portland comedian Amy Miller. Keep an eye out for stage design, too: Students and faculty from Portland State University School of Architecture designed the Treeline stage and won a jury award from the Portland chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Mark your calendars: Two more Oregon music festivals are on the horizon — the 9th annual Beloved Festival returns to Tidewater Falls Aug. 12-15 with headliners including Rising Appalachia, Tipper and Fatoumata Diawara, and then there’s Marcola’s Mohawk Valley Music Festival Aug. 19-21 featuring Sol Seed, High Step Society, Jelly Bread and Scott Huckabay.

The art of Warpaint: The L.A. indie quartet (two of whom are former Eugeneans — Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman) taking the world by storm announced this week the release of new album Heads Up Sept. 23. As a teaser, the band is streaming all over the interwebs the aptly titled new single “New Song” — a more pop-inflected dance song than the band’s signature woozier, moodier work. Warpaint heads out on tour Aug. 18 and will be playing Portland Sept. 21 and Oakdale, California, Sept. 23, but not Eugene! Why? Can we get them onto the Cuthbert Amphitheater stage already? Band members have said in the past that locals don’t come out for their shows in their hometown. Eugene, it’s time to up your game and welcome the success of your peers, even if they’ve left.

While many of Eugene’s musicians will be busy this weekend filling the stages of the 10th Annual Whiteaker Block Party Aug. 6, some lovely, intimate touring artist shows are happening away from the crowds. Miss Lana Rebel — comprised of Lana Rebel, Kevin Michael Mayfield and a mishmash of guitar, harmonica, fiddle and a saw — offers up some sumptuous, sweet Americana in a FREE concert 8:30 pm Friday, Aug. 5, at Axe & Fiddle in Cottage Grove. Axe & Fiddle hosts another free concert 8:30 pm Saturday, Aug. 6, featuring the fluttery jazz pop of Joanna Wallfisch. Wallfisch also plays the “The Great Song Cycle” show at the Eugene Saturday Market at 10 am earlier that day.
