Oregon Shakespeare Festival The 75th anniversary of Ashland’s main event, which pulled in a record number of people and earned a record amount of money last year, for damn good reason, runs throughout most of the year, but the outdoor Elizabethan Stage opens in early June. One of Shakespeare’s best sequences kicks off with this year’s Henry IV, Part One, and then there’s the playful, lovely Twelfth Night and the hard-to-handle Merchant of Venice. The hottest ticket should be for the Bowmer’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (only through July 4!), and a fantastic Hamlet comes a close second. But there’s more, with contemporary dramas and comedy, not to mention a musical (She Loves Me) and the towering, hotly anticipated Throne of Blood. Don’t forget the Green Show in the festival courtyard (amusingly now called The Courtyard Stage) each evening. Take a break between plays to wander down to Lithia Park; empty your wallet in the gift shop; make time for one of the fascinating backstage tours; celebrate this internationally known festival by signing up for a membership. If you’re adventurous, you might discover one of the secret midnight readings … we can’t say more; we signed a blood oath. Get thee to southern Oregon! All summer, Ashland. www.osfashland.org

Fourth of July Want to get out of town for the 4th of July? Should you feel like heading to the coast, you’ll find a fireworks display — usually accompanied by a parade and possibly a pancake breakfast — in almost every smallish town you can think of, from Coos Bay to Seaside. But coastal towns don’t have a monopoly on patriotic celebrations: Brownsville also has pancakes and fireworks, and Bend has an old-fashioned July 4th celebration complete with pet parade. The Nehalem Bay Winery hosts a BBQ following the Manzanita parade; the Coos Bay waterfront offers an entire family fun day complete with face painting, crafts, fishing ponds and more. While many towns have their own websites with event info, www.traveloregon.com is a handy resource for checking holiday listings all over the place. A clambake? An old-fashioned social? A stop at one of Oregon’s lovely wineries? The only hard part is making a decision. And probably finding parking once you get there.

Oregon Brewers Festival Oregon’s big beer event has a lot to recommend it, from the more than 80 beers from all over the country to the exhibits, restaurants, soda garden, live music and vendors to the fact that the festival recommends alternative modes of transporation (which makes extra sense given that they want you to enjoy their beer). It all begins with the Oregon Brewers Brunch (10am, $36 for food, two pints of Deschutes beer, a T-shirt and a $10 festival tasting package) & Parade, which begins at 11:30 am July 22 at Deschutes Brewery’s Portland Public House and winds its way to the main festival’s opening festivities.
