Goonies R Still Good Enough

Though the northern coast town of Astoria has been home to Lewis and Clark, Benji, Free Willy and around 10,000 current residents, to some people — most of a certain age — it’ll always be best known as the set of The Goonies.

The 1985 treasure hunt slash epic good vs. evil adventure followed a group of kids desperately searching for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure — buried centuries ago beneath the city — so that they can prevent their neighborhood being torn down to build a golf course. Featuring such now-famous names as Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Josh Brolin and Corey Feldman, the movie put Astoria forever on the pop culture map. And this summer marks The Goonies’ 25th anniversary.

Astoria is celebrating from June 4-7 with everything from tours of filming locations and meet and greets with the cast to a Goonies-themed concert night and a Truffle Shuffle — this one a 5k run, not a bizarre dance-off.

Most events require a ticket and cost around $20, though some are free, like the ’80s Night Out on Saturday. For serious Goonies, a weekend pass to all the events (except the Truffle Shuffle and showings of the film) costs $130.
